Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly considering a major squad adjustment ahead of the upcoming IPL mini-auction, with young all-rounder Prashant Veer emerging as a potential release candidate. The franchise is looking to strengthen its auction budget, and the 20-year-old Uttar Pradesh cricketer could be among the players sacrificed to create additional financial flexibility.
Veer was acquired for a massive INR 14.2 crore at the Abu Dhabi auction, matching the amount spent on wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma. However, his performances during the season have not fully justified the investment.
The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder managed 90 runs across six appearances, featuring in five innings. He failed to register a wicket, while his best contribution with the bat was 43 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Kartik Sharma's Performances Could Save His Place
Unlike Veer, Kartik Sharma delivered more encouraging numbers in his debut season. The 20-year-old Rajasthan batter accumulated 295 runs in 11 matches, maintaining an average of 32.77. His highest score was an impressive 71 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
These performances could work in Sharma's favour as CSK evaluate their retention options. Although both youngsters carried hefty price tags, Sharma appears to have made a stronger case for another opportunity.
Nevertheless, the franchise has reportedly not reached a final decision regarding player retention and releases.
Importantly, CSK may not be ready to abandon Veer permanently. One possibility is to release him before the auction and attempt to purchase him again at a more reasonable price.
The Super Kings currently have INR 2.4 crore remaining in their purse. Following the INR 5 crore increase in the salary cap, their available funds are expected to reach INR 7.4 crore.
With franchises required to submit their retention lists by November 15, CSK must finalise their plans ahead of the December 16 mini-auction in Goa.
