The IPL 2025 has already implemented some new rules ahead of the start of the season. From the expansion of DRS to saliva ban to third umpires having the final call for overhead wides, the BCCI has looked to give them more empowerment to express themselves on the field.

One of the newest rule change that has been implemented is the use of a new ball after the end of the 11th over to counter the impact of dew in the match.

Unlike the previous seasons, the bowling team defending the target will get a new ball after the 11th over to defend their target. So far, the games have been closely fought with the SRH vs RR match being an exception.

Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 287 batting first and killing the game in the process. The Royals, despite getting 242 themselves, lost the game by 44 runs.

Fourth Umpire To Oversee Multiple Elements In The Game Of Cricket

Now the BCCI has also broadened the responsibility of the fourth umpire and have tried involving them more in the game. Generally, the fourth umpire operates beyond the boundary line where they check the size of bats. Now their responsibility have been increased where they can monitor players retiring to the dugout, with particular attention to bowlers who leave the field after completing their quota of overs.

"The 4th Umpire is an important member of the team, the voice of the PCT at the boundary. Players are requested not to approach the 4th Umpire for any grievance against a decision. The 4th Umpire is empowered to check bats at any time on matchdays & practice days. They will be monitoring those bowlers who have left the field after finishing their bowling quota & those players who are habitual offenders of leaving the field to take rest," a BCCI statement said.

Going forward, the fourth umpire will have a role in the teams selecting the balls ahead of the start of the innings. He will take the box of balls to the two different dressing rooms and oversee the selection of the balls as well. From now on, he will also monitor who has access to the pitch area during any breaks or before the start of play.
