The Indian Premier League (IPL) could begin much earlier than usual in 2027, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering a revised schedule to avoid weather-related disruptions during the latter stages of the tournament.

BCCI Considering Early Start for IPL 2027

IPL 2026 witnessed several matches being affected by early monsoon showers, particularly in cities such as Kolkata and Dharamshala. In response, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that the IPL Governing Council is discussing the possibility of starting the tournament earlier and concluding it before the onset of the monsoon season.

"This year, IPL started around March 29 and concluded on May 31. The concern is that after May 15, there is always an apprehension of rainfall or the pre-monsoon season beginning," Saikia told PTI.

Extreme Weather Also a Major Concern

Apart from rain interruptions, Saikia highlighted the challenges posed by extremely hot and humid weather conditions, which affect both players and spectators, especially during afternoon matches.

"On the other hand, there is hot weather, which is not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds. Therefore, there is a discussion going on in BCCI as well as in our IPL Governing Council regarding whether we can start the tournament a little earlier than the end of March," he said.

IPL 2027 Could Begin Between March 10 and March 15

Saikia further hinted that the BCCI is exploring the possibility of starting IPL 2027 between March 10 and March 15 and wrapping up the tournament by mid-May.

"From next year, we will make an effort, and I have already instructed our General Manager (Game Development), former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla, to explore available windows. We are looking at whether we can start by March 10 and conclude by May 15 so that there are no adverse weather conditions leading into the playoffs and final of IPL 2027, which will be the tournament's 20th edition," he stated.

No Plans to Expand IPL Beyond 74 Matches

Saikia also addressed speculation regarding a possible expansion of the tournament format. Reports had suggested that the IPL could move from the current 74-match structure to a 94-match format, allowing every team to face each other twice during the league stage.

However, the BCCI Secretary clarified that there are no immediate plans to increase the number of matches.

Why IPL Expansion Is Not Feasible Right Now

"That is not feasible at this moment because we have to consider several factors, including the availability of players from different countries," Saikia explained.
"With great difficulty, we can secure this two-month window. Extending the tournament beyond that period would be challenging, as other countries also have bilateral commitments. Therefore, there is currently no discussion regarding increasing the number of matches from 74 to 94. It is not happening immediately," he concluded.
