Ishan Kishan’s injury has opened the door for teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi to make his way into India’s playing XI for the second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24. With Kishan likely to miss the match due to a groin strain, the youngster could get a crucial opportunity to showcase his talent on the international stage.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kishan sustained a right adductor strain during India’s four-wicket victory in the opening T20I. The wicketkeeper-batter’s availability for the second match remains doubtful, with the team management waiting for the medical team’s assessment.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Emerges as a Strong Contender
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak acknowledged that Suryavanshi would be considered if Kishan fails to recover in time. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Kotak clarified that the recent changes in the batting order were influenced by Kishan’s injury rather than a planned tactical reshuffle.
“If Ishan can't play — unless he recovers completely, the medical team will tell us — then obviously Vaibhav comes into the calculations as a batter,” Kotak said, adding that the youngster was among the strongest options available.
Suryavanshi has not featured in the playing XI since the Asian Games, and his chances of getting a game appeared limited given the impressive form of India’s established opening batters. However, Kishan’s injury could change the situation and provide the youngster with an unexpected breakthrough.
India Face Selection Call Ahead of Christchurch Clash
India also have the option of bringing in Shivam Dube, who can contribute with both bat and ball as a medium pacer. Nevertheless, Suryavanshi’s inclusion would give the team an opportunity to assess another batting option in a competitive international setting.
With India leading the series 1-0, the second T20I presents an opportunity to strengthen their advantage while managing an injury concern. If Kishan is ruled out, all eyes will be on whether the team management backs Suryavanshi for a place in the playing XI.
The match in Christchurch could therefore become a defining moment for the young batter, who may get his chance sooner than expected.
