India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has praised veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his experience and understanding of the shortest format, highlighting the value he brings to the team ahead of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.
Bhuvneshwar recently returned to the Indian T20I setup after nearly four years, receiving a late call-up for the series-deciding match against the West Indies in Bengaluru. However, rain washed out the contest, denying the experienced seamer an opportunity to showcase his skills.
Shreys Highlights Bhuvneshwar’s T20 Experience and IPL Success
Despite being close to 37, Bhuvneshwar remains in contention for a longer stint with the national team, with his experience and proven ability to deliver under pressure strengthening his case for selection.
Speaking ahead of the opening T20I against New Zealand, Iyer underlined the importance of having a bowler of Bhuvneshwar’s calibre in the squad. He pointed to the pacer's understanding of T20 cricket and his recent success in the Indian Premier League as key reasons behind his inclusion.
“Bhuvi definitely brings a lot of experience to the team,” Iyer said. He added that India had been short of experience in the bowling department after the IPL, with several new bowlers coming into the setup.
Iyer also highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s ability to dominate the format, noting that his experience of winning IPL titles in recent years gives him a strong understanding of the demands of high-pressure T20 cricket.
Bhuvneshwar Faces Competition for a Place in India’s Playing XI
With Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh among India's preferred pace options, Bhuvneshwar faces stiff competition for a place in the playing XI. However, Iyer believes the competition for places will benefit the team by encouraging every player to maintain consistent performances.
Describing the selection dilemma as a “sweet headache”, Iyer stressed that the ultimate objective remains winning matches and building a strong team.
India Look to Adapt to New Zealand’s Pace-Friendly Conditions
New Zealand's conditions could offer assistance to swing bowlers, potentially creating opportunities for Bhuvneshwar to make an impact. India will look to adapt quickly to the conditions as they begin another important assignment.
The India-New Zealand T20I series begins tomorrow with the first T20I, where Bhuvneshwar's experience could prove valuable as India look to start the tour on a positive note.
