Sunil Gavaskar

Former skipper Sunil Gavaskar has spoken some strong words after India's Test series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India lost the series 3-1 and in the process was eliminated from the WTC final race.

Australia after their series win against India made it to the final. South Africa is the other team to join them in the final after they whitewashed Pakistan in the Test series home.

Gavaskar spoke to Star Sports after the end of the fifth and final Test in Sydney. What he said was in response to India's dismal batting performance in the series. Rohit Sharma (31 runs in five innings) and Virat Kohli (190 runs in nine innings) the two big names in Indian cricket did not score as many runs as expected of them.

Shubman Gill scored just 93 runs in five innings and Rishabh Pant 255 runs in 9 innings. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top scorer among Indian batters with 391 runs in 10 innings. KL Rahul made 276 runs in 10 innings.

Sunil Gavaskar Urges Indian Batters To Play Domestic Cricket

He also urged the Indian batters to play in the Ranji Trophy without offering any excuses to iron out technical deficiencies that led to their peril in two successive series against New Zealand and Australia. He further said it was worrying to see the Indian batters churning out underwhelming efforts against New Zealand at home and in the just-concluded series against Australia.

“On January 23, there is the next round of the Ranji Trophy. Let’s see how many players from this squad play. There should be no excuse for not being able to play,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“If you do not play those matches, Gautam Gambhir will have to take a few tough decisions against those who are not available for the Ranji Trophy,” he further added.

The second round of Ranji Trophy matches starts from January 23. However, with the white-ball series starting from January 22, it will be interesting to see who are the players who will be available to play domestic cricket depending on the squad that is selected for the home series against Australia.
