South Africa’s middle-order batter, Rassie van der Dussen, has acknowledged that the upcoming Champions Trophy may be his last tournament. He recently spoke with the press, hinting at his potential retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Van der Dussen is uncertain whether he will receive a new contract after this tournament, as his current central contract with South Africa expires in April. Although he is confident he will be offered a new contract, he recognizes that this could be the final ICC tournament of his career.
"It's definitely a possibility that it's my last ICC tournament, I’m not saying I’ll step away, but the reality is that younger guys are pushing through", van der Dussen explained in Karachi ahead of South Africa’s final group-stage match against England.
He mentioned that, while he remains fit, young players such as Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs are emerging, and he could soon be replaced. Since making his debut in 2019, Van der Dussen has been a reliable batter for South Africa, offering flexibility by batting at various positions in the middle order. He began his career batting at number 3, but has since been demoted to numbers 4, 5, and 6. Recently, he played at number 4 in the team's first match of the 2025 Champions Trophy against Afghanistan.
"If I don’t perform, someone will take my spot. I certainly don’t expect preferential treatment," he said.
In recent matches, Van der Dussen has struggled with consistency in this format; however, he scored his first fifty-plus score in his last innings against Afghanistan after going 12 innings without one.
When asked about his future, he expressed skepticism, believing that his fitness might keep him in the Proteas team for a while longer.
"Physically, I’m putting in the work. If I’m still good enough, I’d love to stay in the mix. If not, that’s fine too," he added.
He has noted the trend of players his age retiring to participate in franchise T20 leagues but insists that he is committed to the Proteas until his retirement and has no immediate plans to join any franchise leagues. He also hopes to contribute to the team for the 2027 World Cup.
Unlike some senior cricketers choosing to play in T20 leagues, he remains obligated to the Proteas. "Representing my country has always been my ultimate goal. If I get another contract, I’ll take it."
"Being here (taking about the 2027 World cup) is the ultimate thing for me. Leagues are nice, but they’re not my be-all and end-all."
South Africa will face England in Karachi
In their upcoming match, South Africa will face England in the final group stage game. If Australia defeats Afghanistan, South Africa will confirm their spot in the semi-finals. If not, they will need to win against England to advance to the knockout stage.
