The BCCI has named three of India's brightest young spin prospects—Vipraj Nigam, Tanush Kotian, and Harsh Dubey—as net bowlers for the upcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka.
India will tour Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series as part of their ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) campaign. With the series set to be played in spin-friendly conditions, the team management has opted for an all-spin group of net bowlers to help the batters prepare against Sri Lanka's biggest strength.
The first Test begins on August 15, with the Indian squad expected to travel soon. Before the series, India will also play a three-day practice match against Sri Lanka 'B'.
Why has India chosen only spinners as net bowlers?
Sri Lankan pitches, particularly at Galle and Colombo, are traditionally known to assist spin bowlers. Over the past few years, Sri Lanka have built a formidable home record by making the most of these conditions.
India's struggles against spin were evident during their previous tour, when they lost the ODI series 2-0 after failing to counter Sri Lanka's slow bowlers consistently. With another spin-heavy challenge awaiting, the team management has selected quality domestic spinners capable of replicating match conditions during net sessions and practice games.
Tanush Kotian continues to knock on the doors
Mumbai all-rounder Tanush Kotian has been one of the most consistent performers in domestic red-ball cricket. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has often seen him mentioned as a long-term candidate to fill the void left by Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement, thanks to a similar all-round skill set.
Although an India call-up is yet to arrive, being part of the touring contingent as a net bowler presents another opportunity to impress. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the support staff are expected to keep a close watch on his performances during training.
Vipraj Nigam brings variety to the attack
Vipraj Nigam grabbed attention with his impressive performances for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, but the leg-spinner has also quietly built a strong reputation in red-ball cricket.
Known for his variations and ability to extract sharp turn, Nigam recently featured for India A during their tour of Sri Lanka, where he adapted well to the conditions. His experience on Sri Lankan surfaces could prove valuable in helping India's batters prepare for the likes of Akila Dananjaya and Tharindu Rathnayake, who are expected to play key roles for the hosts.
Harsh Dubey rewarded for a breakthrough season
Left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey enjoyed a breakthrough domestic season, finishing among the leading wicket-takers while also making valuable lower-order contributions with the bat. His consistent performances have established him as a reliable all-round option and earned him a place among India's net bowlers for the tour.

The two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka will be played from August 15 to August 27, marking another important chapter in both teams' World Test Championship campaigns.
