Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, appointing former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel as assistant coach and former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma as bowling coach.
The appointments are part of the franchise’s revamped coaching setup, led by Zaheer Khan, as the five-time IPL champions prepare for the upcoming season.
Albie Morkel Returns to CSK as Assistant Coach
Morkel shares a long-standing association with Chennai Super Kings, having represented the franchise from the inaugural IPL season in 2008 until 2013. During his time with CSK, he played 92 matches and was part of the teams that won the IPL titles in 2010 and 2011, along with the Champions League T20 trophy in 2010.
The 45-year-old’s return marks a new chapter in his association with the franchise, this time in a coaching role. Morkel was appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 in July, succeeding Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the position.
Expressing his excitement about returning to the Super Kings family, Morkel highlighted his special memories at Chepauk and his eagerness to guide the team’s younger players.
He will work alongside Gareth Batty, who has joined CSK after leaving his role as Surrey head coach. Sridharan Sriram will continue as an assistant coach, while James Foster has been retained as fielding coach.
Mohit Sharma Appointed CSK Bowling Coach
CSK have also confirmed Mohit Sharma as their new bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027. The former India international began his IPL journey with the franchise, making his appointment a return to familiar surroundings.
Mohit enjoyed memorable success during his playing career, including winning the Purple Cap and being part of CSK’s Champions League T20-winning campaign in 2014.
The right-arm fast bowler said he was delighted to return to the franchise where his IPL career began, describing the appointment as coming back home. He also expressed his desire to share his experience and work closely with head coach Zaheer Khan.
CSK Turn Attention to IPL 2027 Auction
With the coaching appointments taking shape, CSK’s immediate priority will be finalising their player retention list ahead of the mini-auction scheduled for December. The franchise will look to build a competitive squad as it targets another IPL title under its revamped coaching leadership.
