From Borrowed Gear to India Cap: Kalita's Cricket Dream

Discover Jintimani Kalita's inspiring journey from Assam to the Indian cricket team. Making her ODI debut, she represents a new era for women's cricket in her state.

Jintimani Kalita, a 22-year-old cricketer from Assam, recently made her One Day International (ODI) debut for India against Zimbabwe on October 23 in Vadodara. This historic achievement makes her only the second woman from Assam to represent the Indian senior team, following Uma Chetry.

Kalita's path from Mangaldoi to the national squad was paved with dedication, starting her journey after accompanying her younger brother to cricket coaching. Despite financial challenges, her father's support and her own persistence allowed her to train and progress through the domestic cricket system for Assam.

Her career took a significant turn in 2023 when she was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 10 lakh at the first Women's Premier League (WPL) auction. This opportunity not only provided valuable experience alongside international stars but also financial support for her family.

Further honing her skills, Kalita represented India A in 2026, participating in assignments against England and Australia A. She was then selected for India's T20I series against Zimbabwe in October but earned her ODI cap on October 23, replacing an injured Renuka Singh Thakur, and was presented with her maiden India cap by captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

During her debut match, Kalita bowled five overs, conceding 23 runs as India secured a nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe by successfully chasing a target of 197. Although she did not take a wicket, her debut marks a new beginning and a testament to her perseverance, inspiring women's cricket in Assam.
