Former Australian international all-rounder Moises Henriques has officially announced that he will represent his birth nation, Portugal, in the upcoming T20 World Cup Europe Qualifiers.

The 39-year-old represented Australia in 44 international matches across formats. However, he was never a regular member of the national side as opportunities remained limited, with his last international appearance coming in 2021. Since then, Henriques has continued to perform consistently in the domestic circuit while hoping for a national comeback. But with that chapter now seemingly closed, he has decided to embrace a new opportunity.

Henriques has now opted to represent his birth country, Portugal, for the remainder of his international career. His arrival is expected to provide the Portuguese side with invaluable experience as they aim to secure qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

The veteran all-rounder is now eligible to represent Portugal after completing the International Cricket Council's mandatory three-year cooling-off period required for players switching from a Full Member nation to an Associate nation. He is now awaiting official confirmation from the Portuguese Cricket Federation.

Moises Henriques Brings a Trophy-Laden Career to Portugal

Henriques brings with him a decorated career, having won more than 11 major titles. Most of his success has come in T20 cricket, where he played a pivotal role in the Sydney Sixers' three Big Bash League triumphs, including leading the side to back-to-back titles as captain. He has also won five domestic titles with New South Wales Blues, in addition to lifting the Champions League T20 trophy.

Outside Australia, Henriques was an integral part of Sunrisers Hyderabad's title-winning campaign in the 2016 Indian Premier League. He contributed 182 runs and claimed 12 wickets during the season, helping Hyderabad defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final and showcasing his all-round value.

With a seasoned campaigner like Henriques set to join the squad, Portugal will undoubtedly become one of the Associate teams to watch in the coming years as they continue their rise in international cricket.
