England were bowled out for 248 after a good start in the first ODI in Nagpur on Thursday. The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first. Phil Salt (43) and Ben Duckett (32) added a 75-run opening stand for the first wicket.
The first wicket for India came via a mix up when salt was left stranded when he took off for the third run. That was the opening the Indian team needed to comeback into the match.
After England lost their first wicket, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals with the Indian bowlers making an impact. Joe Root who joined the ODI squad for the series scored just 19 in the first game. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell scored fifties but could not push the score to 250. Buttler's wicket came after a 59-run stand with Bethell. England previously after a 75-run opening stand were reeling at 77/3 before Buttler and Bethell did the repair job.
Harshit Rana, Ravindra Jadeja Pick Three Wickets Each
For India, Harshit Rana on his debut picked up three wickets. Meanwhile, Rana became the first bowler to pick up three wickets across two formats. He picked up 3/33 on his T20I debut and followed it up with 3/53 in the first ODI. Ravindra Jadeja also picked up three wickets. Rana took the wickets of Duckett, Livingstone and Brook, Jadeja accounted for the wickets of Root, Bethell and Adil Rashid.
It was a comprehensive performance from the Indian bowlers who performed as a team with all the bowlers contributing to fetch the wickets. Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav took one each to back up the rest of the bowlers.
India now needs to score 249 to win the first ODI. With Virat Kohli missing the first ODI, Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the batting with Rohit Sharma on his ODI debut to start the chase.
