India’s World Test Championship (WTC) campaign has become considerably more complicated after the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo ended in a draw. The result meant India secured only 16 points from the Sri Lanka tour instead of the 24 that were available, leaving them fifth on the WTC points table with a points percentage (PCT) of 51.52%.

With the fourth edition of the WTC now moving into its crucial third phase, India have little room for error. Their remaining schedule includes a two-Test away series against New Zealand followed by a five-Test home series against Australia. Those seven matches will effectively determine whether India can make another appearance in the WTC final.

The draw in Colombo has made the qualification race much more demanding for India. While a perfect run in their remaining seven Tests would lift their PCT to 70.37%, even one defeat would bring that figure down significantly. A 6-1 record across the remaining matches would leave India close to the 65% mark, meaning their qualification could depend heavily on results involving other contenders.

New Zealand Series Could Set the Tone

India’s immediate challenge will be the two-Test series in New Zealand. Losing both matches would leave them with very little margin for error against Australia. In that scenario, India would need a near-perfect home series against Australia to remain firmly in contention.

For example, a 0-2 defeat in New Zealand followed by a 5-0 series victory over Australia would leave India with a PCT of 59.26%. That figure could make qualification extremely difficult and would likely force India to rely on favourable results elsewhere.

Australia Series Could Decide India’s Fate

The five-Test home series against Australia is therefore likely to define India’s WTC campaign. Winning all five matches would not only boost India’s own PCT but also directly reduce Australia’s percentage, making the contest particularly significant.

Recent WTC qualification races show how demanding the benchmark can be. South Africa and Australia reached the previous final with PCTs of 69.44% and 67.54%, while Australia and India qualified for the 2023 final with 66.67% and 58.80%, respectively.

India’s route to the final is therefore still open, but the Colombo draw has made it considerably narrower. With seven Tests remaining, India must now maximise every available point, beginning with New Zealand, before turning their attention to the high-stakes series against Australia.
