IPL 2025 to Resume in August-September Window as Asia Cup, Bangladesh Tour Face Potential Cancellation - Reports

IPL 2025 to Resume in August-September Window as Asia Cup, Bangladesh Tour Face Cancellation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly exploring the August-September window to resume the suspended Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), as per unconfirmed reports from The Times of India.

The tournament, paused mid-season for one week due to security concerns following Pakistan’s missile attack on several Indian cities on Thursday, faces a tight scheduling challenge with India’s upcoming five-match Test tour of England set to begin in June.

If cross-border tensions persist, this late-summer slot may be the BCCI’s only chance to complete the 18th IPL season.

A Narrow Window for IPL 2025 Resumption

The August-September period, originally reserved for the now-doubtful Bangladesh tour and Asia Cup, could provide a crucial opportunity to stage the remaining 16 IPL matches, including the playoffs and the finale, initially scheduled for May 25 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

However, this hinges on the stabilization of the current situation, as the BCCI prioritizes safety. With India’s departure for England looming in June, squeezing the IPL into the pre-tour window appears unfeasible, making August-September the most viable option.

The IPL 2025 was halted abruptly after the match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) was suspended midway in Dharamsala on May 8 with players and staff evacuated amid heightened alerts.

While the BCCI has labeled the suspension "temporary," the board is grappling with a packed calendar and geopolitical complexities.

India’s tour of Bangladesh, slated for three ODIs and as many T20Is in August, and the 2025 Asia Cup, planned for September at a neutral venue, are reportedly cancelled, with the BCCI unwilling to reconsider its stance on these commitments, regardless of the IPL’s status.

Overseas Option for BCCI

As per several reports, the BCCI is also exploring the option to take the IPL overseas. South Africa, the venue for the 2009 edition, and England are well-equipped with world-class facilities and experience managing high-profile T20 leagues.

However, relocating the tournament poses significant challenges. The availability of overseas players, many of whom expressed concerns during the suspension, remains uncertain. The cooperation of other cricket boards, such as those in England, Australia and South Africa, will be critical in this case.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League 2025 (PSL 2025) has been shifted to Dubai.
