The most anticipated news amid the political shock across the nation is the BCCI's announcement of the venue for the playoffs of the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Typically, the team that won the previous year’s title hosts the final at their home stadium, while the runners-up host Qualifiers 1 and 2, respectively. This year, however, the final will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Key Reasons for Ahmedabad Hosting the IPL Final Again
Security Concerns at Chinnaswamy Stadium
Before the season began and before the schedule announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India reportedly informed Royal Challengers Bengaluru that they could not host matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium due to security concerns stemming from a stampede incident in 2025.
Conditional Approval for RCB’s Home Matches
Despite the concerns, the BCCI accepted the Karnataka government’s decision to retain Chinnaswamy Stadium as RCB’s home ground, allowing the team to play all its league matches there.
VIP Ticket Demand Influenced Final Venue Decision
With fans hoping for a home final, expectations were high. However, the final decision shifted in favor of Ahmedabad after Karnataka ministry officials reportedly requested a large number of corporate and VIP tickets beyond what the BCCI’s guidelines allow, making it unfeasible for the board.
Official Statement from BCCI
“Owing to certain operational and logistical considerations, the TATA IPL 2026 Playoffs will be conducted across three venues this season as a special case. Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, due to requirements from the local association and authorities that exceeded BCCI's established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted.”
IPL 2026 Playoff Venues
Meanwhile, Mullanpur and Dharamshala, home grounds of last year’s runners-up Punjab Kings, will host the Qualifiers and Eliminators, as confirmed by the BCCI.
