New Zealand have suffered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming five-match T20I series, with Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes ruled out due to injuries. Their absence has forced the Black Caps to make changes to their squad, with all-rounder Josh Clarkson and fast bowler Blair Tickner earning call-ups for the series.
Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes Ruled Out
Chapman sustained a hamstring injury while featuring in a T20 league in Europe last month. The left-handed batter is expected to miss the entire T20I series as he focuses on his recovery. The team management will be hoping he regains full fitness in time for New Zealand’s subsequent ODI series against India.
Meanwhile, Foulkes is dealing with a hip flexor complaint. However, his recovery timeline remains uncertain, leaving the team waiting for further clarity regarding his return to action.
Following the injury setbacks, Clarkson and Tickner have been included in New Zealand’s 16-member squad. Both players will have an opportunity to contribute as the Black Caps prepare for a challenging series.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over the injuries but remained optimistic about the replacements joining the squad.
“I’m gutted for Mark and Zak and I wish them both a smooth recovery,” Walter said.
“We’re fortunate to be able to lean on the expertise of Josh and Blair. I know they’re both very excited to be involved in what’s shaping up to be an epic T20 series.”
New Zealand T20I Series Schedule and Squad Details
The series will begin in Christchurch on October 22, with the second T20I scheduled at the same venue on October 24. The action will then move to Wellington for the third match on October 27, followed by the fourth T20I in Auckland on October 30. The venue and date for the fifth match were not specified in the announced schedule.
New Zealand will be keen to build momentum despite the absence of two important players. Captain Mitchell Santner will lead a squad featuring experienced campaigners such as Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry.
With Clarkson and Tickner stepping in, the Black Caps will look to maintain their competitiveness throughout the series while hoping Chapman and Foulkes make successful recoveries.
