The three-time IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have experienced a challenging season in 2025 following significant changes after their title-winning year. They lost key players like Shreyas Iyer, Sunil Narine, and Venkatesh Iyer. Last season, the team struggled with their batting performance, particularly in hitting sixes, making them one of the least successful teams in that regard. Despite having a strong bowling attack, the batting lineup failed to perform, resulting in their inability to qualify for the playoffs.
This season, KKR attempted to strengthen their batting order, but unfortunately, their entire pace attack has been plagued by injuries. As a result, KKR finds itself in a difficult position ahead of the 2026 season. Here is a preview of the Kolkata Knight Riders as they prepare for the upcoming IPL.
Powerpacked Batting Line-up
To address their issues from the previous season, the Knight Riders have signed Kiwi players Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, along with Australian Cameron Green. Together with skipper Ajinkya Rahane, they are expected to form a solid top order. The Kiwi duo has the ability to attack from the very first ball, while Green and Rahane can adjust the pace of their innings based on the situation.

With the top four positions settled, Ankrish Raghuvanshi, who has shown promise in the past two years, is expected to bat at number five. Although this is not his usual batting position, he has the adaptability to succeed there. Following him, Rinku Singh is anticipated to play a significant role in leadership and finishing responsibilities.
With three overseas players already in place, KKR has one remaining spot available. They are likely to select Sunil Narine, who is crucial for their bowling attack, but they also signed Rovman Powell. If they wish to try Powell, they would need to drop Tim Seifert, which could result in Rahane opening the batting with Allen. Alternatively, there could be an unconventional move to make Narine their opening batter.

Slim Pace Attack
The real challenge lies in the pace attack, as KKR has lost its entire playing eleven in this department. The team has lost Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Matheesha Pathirana, whose availability is uncertain. They have signed Blessing Muzarbani to replace Mustafizur Rahman, who has been removed from the contract.
Now, their pace attack will be led by Vaibhav Arora, who has excelled in the powerplay, with the addition of Navdeep Saina. They also have Umran Malik, and these three are expected to headline the bowling unit.
Formidable Spin Duo
Despite a weakened pace attack, the duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy is expected to carry the bowling responsibilities, regardless of conditions. Their eight overs will be critical for KKR, complementing the strong batting lineup. However, with Sunil Narine aging and becoming more predictable, Varun Chakravarthy, who was somewhat inconsistent during the T20 World Cup, needs to put in the effort to prevent the team from conceding too many runs.
Is Ajinkya Rahane the Right Choice?
KKR faces several challenges, but one major concern from the last season is Ajinkya Rahane’s role as captain. After losing Shreyas Iyer, KKR has not signed a proper replacement and has had to appoint Rahane as their skipper. While Rahane’s experience has been beneficial at times, many experts view him as a weak link, especially given that his batting form will be crucial for leading the team effectively. Nevertheless, his experience may help KKR emerge from their struggles as they aim to return to form, bolstered by their strong batting lineup and formidable spin attack.
