The mighty Punjab Kings, who started the season strong with six consecutive wins, appeared poised to be the first team to qualify for the playoffs. However, their season took a disappointing turn as they lost six matches in a row, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Here’s a breakdown of what went wrong for Shreyas Iyer’s team.

A Dream Start for Punjab Kings Before the Collapse

Since the last mega auction, especially after acquiring Shreyas Iyer two years ago, the Punjab Kings looked like a well-rounded team on paper. With a combination of young talents like Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, the experienced Australian duo of Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly, and the leadership of 'Sarpanch Saab' Shreyas Iyer himself, the team was well equipped. In the bowling department, they were led by Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, supported by a mix of overseas power and Indian uncapped bowlers.

The Kings dominated the first seven matches, securing 13 points despite missing one game due to rain against KKR. To qualify for the playoffs, they needed three more wins. Their formula for success was straightforward: excel in chases, start strong during the powerplay, maintain momentum in the middle overs, and finish matches before the 20 overs. They even set a record by chasing down 264 runs against the Delhi Capitals, completing the chase with seven balls to spare—showcasing themselves as a formidable batting unit.

From Dominance to Disaster: Punjab Kings' Phase-Two Collapse

Things took a turn for the worse in the second phase of the tournament, exposing the team's vulnerabilities, especially in bowling. Pressure mounted as dropped catches became an issue, with Shashank Singh notably dropping seven catches over four matches. As the saying goes, "batters can win you matches, while bowlers win you tournaments." Despite having Yuzvendra Chahal on their side, who missed out on around eight wickets due to these dropped catches, the Kings found themselves on a losing streak.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer, who began the tournament with 309 runs in the first seven matches at an average of 44.1, struggled to maintain his form in the second phase, managing only 87 runs in the following six games at a dismal average of 14.5. This decline mirrored the Punjab Kings' dramatic downturn throughout the season.

The captain's inability to control his team’s performance, particularly regarding bowling changes under pressure, contributed to their downfall.

Social Media Banter

While it may seem unrelated to the on-field struggles, the Punjab Kings' social media interactions have also impacted team morale. The Kings are known for their engagement on X (formerly Twitter), often posting memes to troll their opponents. Initially, this banter bolstered their confidence. However, after mocking teams with certain numbers and targeting KKR following a rain-canceled match—claiming they “lost easy two points due to rain”—they faced significant backlash online. Furthermore, their defeat against RCB prompted RCB's admin to respond to their trolling style, adding to the pressure.

Currently, the Punjab Kings find themselves in a challenging position to qualify for the playoffs. With two matches remaining, they can reach 15 points by winning their last game. However, their qualification scenario appears more difficult than ever, with slim chances of making it through.
