Pant walked out to bat on Day 2 in Manchester

The biggest moment of day 2 came when Rishabh Pant walked out to bat with an injured toe in the first session of the day’s play. Pant came in at the fall of Shardul Thakur’s wicket, who is playing his second Test of the series.

Thakur played in the Headingley Test and then was made to sit out from the next two. He came into this must-win game in Manchester in the place of Nitish Reddy as he was ruled out with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant was welcomed with a rousing reception when he walked out to bat for the second time. He was unbeaten on 37 runs when he picked up his toe injury.

He tried to scoop Chris Woakes on a fullish delivery. The ball missed the bat and hit him flush on his right toe. Pant was bleeding and was in a lot of pain as he was stretched off the ground.

He was then taken for scans immediately, which resulted in a broken toe. The BCCI came out with a statement on Rishabh Pant and as per reports in Indian Express, the management had thought about making him bat with painkillers if there was need. The need came in sooner rather than later as India lost quick wickets in the first session. India first lost the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja ( 20 runs off 40 balls). Shardul Thakur (41 runs off 88 balls).

“The scan report showed a fracture and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a pain killer. He still needs support to walk though and chances of his batting looks very bleak,” Indian Express quoted a source as saying.

Thakur played a good hand and was dismissed almost identically as he was dismissed in the two innings of the Headingley Test. After Thakur’s 41-run knock, Pant went onto score a half century and added 17 more runs to his overnight score.
