India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is likely to undergo surgery in England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to issue an official update regarding the right-hand batter's medical update. The Mumbai Indians (MI) batter was last seen in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season, where he amassed a record-topping 717 runs and won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
However, with the recent setback, Surya could miss some of the T20I games for India. According to reports, the surgery might take a month or two for full recovery. However, with the Men in Blue not playing any T20Is in two months, the 34-year-old has some window to rehabilitate and get to full fitness.

India will next be seen in the T20Is in August when they travel to Bangladesh for a white-ball series, followed by a home series against WTC 2025 Champions South Africa, and then followed by a series against two times T20 World Cup Champions West Indies. Suryakumar is a vital player in India's T20I scheme of things, as he is not only the leader but one of the best batters for the team in the middle overs.

With the T20 World Cup due in February, India will get to play more than 15 matches in the build-up to the showpiece event. These matches are vital preparation for the defending champions to finalize playing XIs and identify players for the respective roles. Despite the retirements of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the shortest format, team India has managed to build solid bench strength and is playing as true blue champions in the shortest format of the game.
Suryakumar has led well since taking over from Rohit and has won a series against South Africa, Sri Lanka, and England.
