Akash Deep's heroic performance in the second Test at Edgbaston against England has given some sort of relief to his family in their darkest hours. While the nation celebrated India's record-breaking win, for Deep's family, who were suffering pain after his elder sister was diagnosed with cancer, this moment came as a breath of fresh air and healed their trauma for at least some time.
Deep's sister currently resides in Lucknow, and for Akhand Jyoti Singh, 36, it was a very joyous moment, and she briefly also forgot about cancer.
"Akash was playing for Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) in IPL 2025 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a knot in my intestines that required surgery. Akash used to visit me in the hospital every day after finishing his practice. He has been so worried about me," she told TOI.
Jyoti was diagnosed with Colon cancer in April 2025. She lives in Lucknow with her husband, who is employed by a public bank.

This is not the first time Deep's family has been through such a big trauma. A few years ago, the pacer lost his father, who was a school teacher, and elder brother within months before he had even made his Test debut in July 2024. Deep's mother said that his son has always displayed exemplary courage in the face of extreme adversities and personal tragedies that the family has been through. However, he always manages to gather himself and put in the best performance for his team.
