Aakash Chopra Calls Out Shreyas Iyer for Misleading Claims About His Former Team

Summary

Aakash Chopra responds to Shreyas Iyer’s claims of poor communication from KKR, questioning his accusations and offering a different perspective on the situation.

Shreyas Iyer

Aakash Chopra has hit back at Shreyas Iyer over his recent statement regarding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where the latter accused the franchise of poor communication surrounding his retention. Iyer had expressed his confusion over KKR’s lack of effort in initiating talks about retaining him, despite being the team’s captain. According to Iyer, this lack of communication ultimately led to the mutual parting of ways. However, Chopra, in a more nuanced response, has called into question the crux of Iyer's claims, suggesting that the situation might not be as one-sided as the former KKR skipper portrayed it.

Shreyas recently shared in an interview with Indian Express that while he had a great time at KKR, he was left confused when the team didn’t make any real effort to discuss his retention for months. He mentioned that the lack of communication led to a mutual parting of ways. Punjab Kings swooped in and signed him for a record-breaking Rs. 26.75 crore.

Aakash Chopra, commenting on his YouTube channel, said, “You can like or dislike certain franchises, but KKR has always tried to keep its core intact. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine have always been with KKR, and they even bought Venkatesh Iyer back in the auction when they couldn’t retain him. This is a franchise that values relationships.”

He added, “Shreyas Iyer was the captain. He should’ve been part of the original plan. KKR didn’t speak to him — and he’s mentioned this in his interview. I can confirm that there were talks between KKR and Shreyas. They had a long conversation, but no deal was made. That’s a separate issue.”

Chopra also hinted that KKR might have had reservations about him ending up at certain franchises via the auction, finishing with a cryptic note: “Karma is real.”

Shreyas Iyer Dismissed for 11 Runs

The live Ranji match between Mumbai and Jammu Kashmir had an unexpected start as the 6'4" bowler Umar Nazir from J&K dismissed prominent players, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and now Shreyas Iyer, for low scores. Shreyas Iyer began his innings with intent, hitting a four and a six, but was dismissed in the same aggressive manner when he attempted another big shot and was caught by a fielder.

Although his form had not been a concern recently, with his teammates struggling, he was expected to perform well during this collapse. Unfortunately, his aggressive approach backfired significantly.
