The clash between India and Pakistan has been facing severe backlash ever since it was scheduled, with the BCCI also ready to go ahead and play against their arch-rivals. As the match is set to take place this Sunday, September 14, 2025, an Indian lawyer has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of the fixture at the Asia Cup 2025.
Since the terror attack in Pahalgam, India-Pakistan relations have further deteriorated. Initially, BCCI officials had stated that India would not play Pakistan in any upcoming tournaments and were even open to boycotting the Asia Cup 2025. However, as the tournament was later shifted to the UAE with both teams agreeing to participate, the BCCI decided to move forward, citing the business and broadcasting stakes involved in such a high-profile clash..

The public and supporters have expressed their disapproval, with many urging Indian players to skip the match. In the meantime, a group of attorneys has filed a petition to halt the match.
The petition argued that holding a cricket match with Pakistan, just days after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor — where both civilians and soldiers lost their lives — sends a message that goes against national sentiment and dignity.
The plea further stated that playing against a country known to harbor terrorism not only damages the morale of the Armed Forces but also causes emotional pain to the families of martyrs and victims of terror.

The petitioners concluded that cricket cannot be placed above national interest, the lives of Indian citizens, or the sacrifices made by those in uniform
A Public Interest Litigation under Article 32 of the Constitution was filed by four law students, led by Ms. Urvashi Jain. The petition sought urgent directions to cancel the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan T20 clash, scheduled for September 14 in Dubai as part of the Asia Cup — a major continental cricket tournament.
Here’s how the brief courtroom exchange unfolded:
Counsel: I may have a bad case, but please allow it to be listed.
Justice Maheshwari: What’s the urgency? It’s just a match — let it happen. The match is on Sunday; what can really be done now?
