Parthiv Patel questions Rishabh Pant's white-ball form

Parthiv Patel dissects Rishabh Pant's inconsistent white-ball form, praises his Test impact, and offers advice for ODI improvement. Read the insights.

Parthiv Patel, a former Indian cricketer, expressed bewilderment regarding Rishabh Pant's performance in white-ball formats. Patel noted that Pant has not lived up to his potential in ODIs, T20Is, or the IPL in recent seasons, a pattern he finds puzzling. In contrast, Patel lauded Pant's crucial role in Test cricket, equating his importance to that of Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli during his captaincy. Pant's ability to win games and his 'X-factor' are undeniable in Tests, making him invaluable.

Patel further commended Pant's wicketkeeping skills in Tests, stating they are often underestimated. He acknowledged that while Pant might not possess the technical finesse of Wriddhiman Saha, his consistency in catching, even on challenging pitches, is noteworthy. Patel argued against selective criticism, suggesting that those who fault Pant when he fails should also praise his explosive batting. As a complete package, Patel considers Pant India's best wicketkeeper-batsman in Tests.

Reflecting on Pant's ODI potential, Patel emphasized the need for him to develop an innings-building tempo, similar to Virat Kohli or Shubman Gill. He believes that simply hitting fours and sixes is insufficient in one-day cricket; the ability and willingness to take singles are equally vital. Patel also touched upon the pressure faced by second-choice wicketkeepers, referencing Ishan Kishan's breakthrough season as an example of potential competition.
