In a major setback, New Zealand pacer Hayley Jensen has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka due to an injury sustained during a warm-up session in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield final. Left-arm spinner Fran Jonas has been named as her replacement in the ODI squad.
The New Zealand Women head coach Ben Sawyer shed light on Jensen’s injury, confirming that her fitness will be reassessed before the T20I series. Sawyer added that Jonas will be joining the team on Saturday morning, just a few hours before the first ODI.
"Jensen will be reassessed before the T20I series. Hopefully, she can get back in time but it will be up to the physios how she goes. Jonas will fly in tonight and join the team in the morning,” Sawyer said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Hayley Jensen’s Injury Adds to New Zealand’s Woes
An injury to Jensen has added to New Zealand's woes as the side is already without their key players. She is the second Otago player to be ruled out of the ODI series versus Sri Lanka, joining Bella James, who also suffered a hamstring injury. Lauren Down has replaced James in the squad.
Their full-time captain Sophie Devine has opted for rest due to her well-being. In Devine’s absence, Suzie Bates will take over the charge of the team. Amelia Kerr is in India playing the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 for Mumbai Indians. Additionally, Lea Tahuhu, Rosemary Mair and Molly Penfold are sidelined with injuries.
The New Zealand ODI squad assembled in Napier on Sunday with their first ODI scheduled on March 4 at the McLean Park in Napier followed by matches in Nelson on March 7 and 9 respectively. New Zealand and Sri Lanka will then play a three-match T20I series, starting on March 14.
