The England players have been fined 10 percent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the Lord's Test. The team has also lost two crucial ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points for their offence.
England won the Lord's Test by 22 runs on day five. India, needing 135 runs to win on the final day, fell agonisingly short of their target. The match was closely fought, with England coming out on top in the end.
The loss of points meant that England dropped from second to third position on the WTC 2025-27 points table. Match referee Richie Richardson imposed the fine on the team as they were found two overs short on the scheduled time. The percentage points also dropped from66.67% to 61.11%. The points table is led by Australia after their Test series win over West Indies with Sri Lanka placed second and India fourth. Bangladesh and West Indies are placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

England violated Article 2.2 of ICC's Code of Conduct that refers to slow over-rate offences. Adding to this, teams are also fined for every over short as per article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions.
“England captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," a statement from the ICC said.
On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd levelled the charges on the England team, after which the match referee imposed the fine.
India Need Back-To-Back Wins Against England To Win Test Seris
Meanwhile, England are leading the Test series 2-1 after their win over India at Lord's. Every Test match has gone on till the final day. England won the first Test by five wickets. India made a strong comeback at Edgbaston, winning by 336 runs and England again reigned supreme at Lord's despite being on the backfoot for the majority of the Test match.
The series is still very well poised despite India trailing 2-1. They need to win the remaining two Tests to win the series.
