Virat Kohli’s Test retirement is still a subject of debate, almost two months after he decided to retire from the format. With the England Test series scheduled to begin from June 20, Kohli announced his Test retirement on June 12.
He decided to retire from Test cricket just days after Rohit Sharma announced his own Test retirement on June 7. The two, as of now, are still active international cricketers, but they might not remain so for much longer.
As per reports, BCCI are looking to phase out the likes of Kohli and Rohit after the ODI series against Australia as they are keen on developing the team looking ahead to the ODI World Cup 2024.

We Needed His Experience In England - Dilip Vengsarkar On Virat Kohli
Meanwhile, former India chief selector and skipper Dilip Vengsarkar reckons that the BCCI should have persuaded Virat Kohli to play the Test series against England. In his absence, Shubman Gill batted at number four and scored 754 runs in the series as India drew the series 2-2.
“If I were the India chief selector, I would have persuaded Virat to bid goodbye to Test cricket after playing the England series. We needed his class and experience in this series,” Vengsarkar told the Times of India.
Both Rohit and Kohli will turn almost 40 by the time the World Cup approaches and the team management are not keen to hold onto their premier matchwinners in the format.
Kohli announced his Test retirement on June 12, but he had reportedly informed the BCCI about his decision a month ago. The BCCI had not announced the team by then and Kohli informed them well before time to give them enough time to name his replacement.
