Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was on 173 when he walked out to bat on Day two of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi. Fans who came out in good numbers on a Saturday anticipated a double-century from the 23-year-old. However, just 27 runs shy of the milestone, the southpaw was dismissed via run-out.

A costly mix-up with skipper Shubman Gill ended Jaiswal's stay at the crease at 175 runs. The opener tried to attempt a quick single off pacer Jayden Seales's delivery to mid-off, the southpaw reached three-quarters of the way towards his batting partner when the captain didn't respond promptly. Windies player Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who was alert in the field, pounced, moving swiftly to his right and throwing the ball in the jiffy to keeper Tevin Imlach, who dislodged the stumps to effect run-out.

Jaiswal, who deserved the double-ton, left the field dejected as he slammed his forehead and made the long walk back to the pavilion. The 175-run knock by the opener also ranks as the highest individual score by an Indian batter ending in a run-out. The unwanted list is headed by Sanjay Manjrekar's 218 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1989, followed by Rahul Dravid's 217 at The Oval in 2002 and 180 in Kolkata in 2001.

Jaiswal sits in fourth position now, ahead of Vijay Hazare's 155 against England in 1951 and Dravid's 144 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 2009.

India in commanding position on the second Test

Speaking about India, they declared their innings on a massive first innings score of 518/5. Apart from Jaiswal's 175, skipper Gill scored his 10th hundred and remained unbeaten on 129. The 26-year-old's ton was also his fifth as the captain in a calendar year, joining Virat Kohli in the elite list for Indian skippers to score the most Test hundreds in a single year. With a huge score posted, Indian bowlers will be hoping to dismantle the Windies just as they did in the first Test.
