Rohit Sharma said the 'door is very much open' for Shami: "We are just monitoring him because while playing Syed Mushtaq Ali, he got some swelling in his knee, which hampers his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very careful, we don't want to bring him here, he pulls up sore or something happens.

We want to be more than 100 percent sure with him because it has been a long time. We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel. They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game, after bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs. But the door is open for him to come and play anytime."

Rohit's response was straightforward, as he did not intend to challenge anyone or put the entire plan at risk. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami was cleared by the NCA as 100% fit, despite experiencing knee swelling. This assessment indicated that Shami is ready for a long-term return, which created confusion about whether Rohit actually wants him on the team. 

Additionally, reports surfaced about a heated argument between Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami at the NCA shortly before Rohit travelled to Australia. It was also noted that Shami has always been in consideration for selection, and his visas for the tour are ready. However, the BCCI is waiting for the official report regarding his injury before making a decision.

Mohammed Shami’s Return from the Injury 

Mohammed Shami has been out of the game for over a year since his impressive performances during the 2023 World Cup. During his rehabilitation, he also missed the IPL. After a year of treatment, he made his return in November, playing for Bengal in a Ranji Trophy match, where he took four wickets despite a shaky start. He has continued to progress well, improving match by match.

Shami then participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) while waiting for a call from the BCCI. He maintained his usual wicket-taking streak, showcasing his veteran skills. However, during this time, he suffered a knee swell, which didn't seem too risky. He temporarily left the field but returned shortly after with no issues. This incident became a focal point and has raised concerns about his full return.

In addition to his bowling, Shami also had a fantastic outing with the bat during the knockouts, scoring 32 not out and helping Bengal recover from a collapse, which propelled them into the quarter-finals of the SMAT on the same day India lost a Test match.
