The 31-year-old all-rounder, Axar Patel, recently expressed his enthusiasm for his new role as Vice Captain of the Indian T20 squad, which will face England in a five-match T20I series. In a recent interview, he shared his readiness to embrace this opportunity and was pleased with his appointment. Reflecting on his journey, Axar noted how far he has come with the Indian team over the years. He feels that this recognition is well-deserved, and being appointed as Vice Captain is a significant acknowledgment of his contributions as an all-rounder.
Axar Patel’s thoughts ahead of the England Tour
Axar Patel, however, isn’t getting overwhelmed by the responsibility or the transition he's facing at such a pivotal point in Indian cricket. Right now, his focus is on making the most of the opportunities he’s given, which have been limited until now.
"The transition is coming, and it will ultimately be the decision of the selectors and the captain. But at the end of the day, I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone," Axar said ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against England in Kolkata. "I’ve played in all three formats—T20s, ODIs, and Tests. So, I just tell myself to do well in the chances I get."
Axar emphasized that if he's given a leadership role in the future, he will focus entirely on fulfilling that responsibility to the best of his ability. "If there is a transition, and I am assigned a role, I’ll focus on that. I always ask myself how I can improve, whether it's in batting or bowling, and if I keep performing, my place will naturally secure itself."
When asked about his new vice-captaincy role, Axar acknowledged the added weight it brings but approached it with the same calm and composed demeanor that has become his hallmark on the field.
"Yes, it’s a new responsibility, but I’m part of a settled T20 team, so there isn’t too much pressure. There will, of course, be small decisions to make during the game," he said. "I’ll be working alongside Surya, and if any input is needed about what we can or can’t do, that’s the kind of conversation I’ve had. Stepping into the leadership group means making some tough calls. But as long as we trust each other and share genuine opinions, it will make the process much easier."
