Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the Sunrisers Leeds for signing Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed during The Hundred auction. He expressed his concerns about the decision made by the team management, which is owned by Indian owners, and sparked a backlash among Indian fans.
Controversy Surrounds Pakistani Players in Indian-Owned Franchises
The recent auction featured Abrar Ahmed being signed by Sunrisers Leeds for the upcoming season, leading to divided opinions on whether a Pakistani player should represent a team owned by Indians. Several former cricketers have voiced their opinions regarding this move.
Gavaskar was one of the critics of the Sunrisers Leeds. He explained his discontent, noting that the salary paid to Ahmed would result in taxes going to the Pakistani government, which he claims funds armaments that could contribute to the deaths of Indian soldiers.
He stated, "Ever since the Mumbai attacks in November 2008, Indian franchise owners have ignored Pakistani players in the IPL. Although belated, the realization that the fees paid to a Pakistani player, who subsequently pays income tax to a government that buys arms and weapons, indirectly contributes to the deaths of Indian soldiers and civilians, has led Indian entities to avoid considering Pakistani artists and sportspersons."
Social Media Calls Out Gavaskar’s Alleged Double Standards
However, reactions on social media have been mixed. Some users pointed out Gavaskar's willingness to commentate alongside Wasim Akram, accusing him of double standards in his stance.
