The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the alleged body-shaming remarks made by a Congress leader on the India captain Rohit Sharma. Saikia called the comment “trivial” and stated how this can impact Rohit and the entire Indian team at a time when they are preparing for their Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final scheduled against Australia.
Saikia further stated that all the Indian players are doing well in the tournament and hoped that no such comments are made that could hamper the team’s performance in the knockout clash.
“Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment when the team is in the middle of such a crucial ICC tournament. It may have demoralising effect on an individual or the team. All the players are performing to their highest potential and results are visible. I hope individuals will desist from making such derogatory statements for personal publicity sake," BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said as quoted to NDTV.
Shama Mohamed Deletes Tweets Criticising Rohit Sharma
For the uninitiated, the Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed had posted a tweet on X, formerly Twitter, criticising Rohit’s fitness after his poor showing with the bat against New Zealand. She also termed Rohit as the “most unimpressive captain India has ever had.”
“@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” the tweet read.
Rohit’s fans did not take kindly to Shama’s tweet. The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) also joined in on the bandwagon and criticised the Congress party. As all of this snowballed into a major controversy, Shama was made to delete her tweet and other related posts on Rohit. She also issued a clarification.
"It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy…,” Shama clarified.
Notably, Team India will face Australia on March 4 in semi-final 1 of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.
