Delhi Capitals kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign away from home against the Lucknow Super Giants. On paper, both teams seemed evenly matched, but the surface at the Ekana Stadium favored bowlers.
Lucknow Super Giants, batting first, could only manage 141 runs and were bowled out in their allotted 20 overs. This disappointing total was largely due to the impressive performances from Lungi Ngidi and Natarajan, who each took 3 wickets.
From 30/4 to Victory: DC’s Incredible Comeback
In response, the Delhi Capitals batters KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka opened the innings. Mohammed Shami, bowling the first over with the new ball, dismissed KL Rahul for a golden duck, marking a déjà vu moment for the batter. By the end of the powerplay, Delhi Capitals found themselves in trouble at 30 for 4, with Sameer Rizvi at the crease.
Then came a pivotal moment in the match. David Miller, who was padded up, was preparing to go in next when head coach Hemang Badani asked him to wait and instead sent in Tristan Stubbs after the dismissal of Axar Patel. Initially seen as a bizarre decision given the situation, this gamble proved crucial. Tristan Stubbs played an anchoring role while Sameer Rizvi took on the bowlers, forming a match-winning partnership of 114 runs that enabled them to chase down the target in just 18 overs.
Bold Call Pays Off: DC Open Their Campaign with a Win
Eventually, Sameer Rizvi was named Player of the Match for his impressive score of 70 not out off 47 balls. However, much of the credit also goes to Hemang Badani for his trust in the young player Rizvi and his decision to prioritize Tristan Stubbs over Ashutosh Sharma as the impact player, allowing them to secure their first win of the season.
