Just months after being named the Player of the Tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup, Sanju Samson finds himself at the center of a fresh selection debate. The BCCI announced India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, and one name that stood out by its absence was Sanju Samson.

The wicketkeeper-batter has endured a difficult run with the bat in recent weeks. During the ongoing T20I series against England, he struggled to make an impact and was even replaced by youngster Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the second T20I. While one poor series doesn't define a player's career, his omission from the Zimbabwe tour has certainly sparked questions.

Is It Poor Form or a Change in Direction?

India has made several changes to the squad, bringing back Rinku Singh and Prabhsimran Singh while handing maiden call-ups to Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur. Ishan Kishan also returns to the setup, adding further competition for the wicketkeeper's role.

With multiple wicketkeeping options available, Sanju's place suddenly doesn't look as secure as it once did. However, it's worth noting that the selectors have also left out several regulars, including Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. That raises another possibility—could this simply be a case of rotation and workload management rather than a permanent snub?

Dropped or Rested?

At this stage, the selectors haven't officially clarified the reason behind Sanju Samson's absence. His recent form may have played a role, but whether this marks the end of his journey in India's T20 setup is still uncertain.

For a player who lifted the Player of the Tournament award not too long ago, writing him off would be premature. The Zimbabwe tour could simply be an opportunity to test new faces ahead of a packed international calendar.
